The Sea-Dweller 1665 "Double Red" - MK2. This version of the dial was mainly observed from 1968 onwards. The printing of the dial is mainly characterized by direct red ink printing on the dial (the red of MK1 was superimposed on white markings). So much so that in order to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Sea-Dweller in 2017, Rolex released a new beast in 43mm with a single line of red text on the dial stating “Sea-Dweller” in a nod to the now infamous vintage reds. This ref. 1655 from 1973 features a so-called third-series (Mark III) execution double-red dial. The matte black dial is in stellar condition with creamy tritium indices. The original black bezel, meanwhile, has faded to a wonderful blue color.
The beautifully serifed dial, brick red text and distinctively grained texture identify this 1665 "Double Red Sea-Dweller" as a Mark III. In lovely condition all round, this 1665 from 1972 has aged very well, the typically thin Tritium lume has turned a nice creamy yellow and the case retains chunky crown guards and thick lugs.
