When I first smelled Jean Patou Joy, I thought, “What’s the big deal?”. Here was an iconic fragrance, reputedly the most expensive perfume in the world (this was before Clive Christian hit the scene), and Jackie O’s favorite. To me, though, Joy smelled ho-hum.
The main difference is in the emphasis, however. Joy is more transparent, with few curves and twists. It has more radiance, however, and its sillage is less heavy and sweet than that of Allure. The finish is soft–sweet musk and woods, with just enough creamy sandalwood to keep things from becoming bland.
Where this JOY succeeds is in its softness thanks to the creamy, plushness of vanilla which smooths all of the hard edges of the patchouli-effect, rounding JOY Intense to elegant effect. OK, so it’s nothing new or groundbreaking, but it is a intriguing twist on an incredibly familiar theme. Jean Patou Joy. Joy was another perfume with a big reputation that took me a while to “get.” For the longest time, to me Joy smelled dense, like a Victorian room with the curtains pulled. I couldn’t feel my way around in it. The three fragrances I will be comparing are: a free sample of Dior Grand Bal, a non-vintage decant of Patou Joy EDP that I got off Surrender to Chance, and a 1989 bottle of Joy EDT that I bought sealed-in-box from ebay and dated based on this article.
